Book for the Week: Five Little Ducks
Ideas:
• Five Little Ducks Book of the Week Ideas:
- Finger Play Actions:
Number - show the number of ducks on your fingers
Over the hills - move hand in front of you like you are going up and down over hills
Far away - move opposite hand in front of you in same motion
Quack - move hand like a duck's beak saying "quack"
- After reading the book several times, sing the song doing the actions by memory.
- As the book progresses, sing each verse in a "more sad" voice.
- Talk about the feeling of "sadness." Show a "sad" face. Talk about things that make us sad just like the Mommy Duck in the story.
- Practice counting backwards from 5 to 1 using your fingers to create a great fine motor skill activity.
- Visit a local pond and feed the ducks.
- Flannelboard Printables - Print off the printables, back with flannel to create a fun way to tell the story. Directions
- Duck Coloring Sheet
-
Duck Craft - Color and black and white template to print off
- Five Little Ducks YouTube Video

- Creation Number Flashcards - Use these cards to introduce each day of creation, help in memory, or place in order of events
- Play the "Creation" adventure and use the coloring sheet on the Charlie Church Mouse Preschool Cd-Rom. Read more...
- As you read the story, have the child give a thumbs up every time God says, "It is good!"
- Using the Sun, Moon, Star Template, cut the shapes out of appropriately colored paper. Using a piece of black construction paper as the background, glue the sun and moon in the sky. Place the stars around the moon. Add the phrase "God made the sun, moon and stars" at the bottom of the page. (Thank you Connie for this idea.)
- Read:
Who Made the World? - Part of the Little Blessings series, this book answers some questions that children have about creation.
• Creation Fingerplay
On Day 1 (On numbers - put corresponding fingers in the air)
God created light (close fists and then quickly open in the air and bring down to side creating arches)
On Day 2
God created the sky (wave arms in the air) and water (make waves with hands)
On Day 3
God created land (with palms facing the floor, run hands flat in front of you) and plants (place one fist inside the other and pop the one fist through the other - sign language for plant)
On Day 4
God created the sun (hold arm up in the air with fingers spread wide), moon (with opposite arm make a "c" formation with your hand in the air), and stars (with index fingers putting up alternate right and left hand moving up in the air - sign language for stars)
On Day 5
God created the fish (swim hands with palms together) and birds (join thumbs and fly hands in the air)
On Day 6
God created animals (choose your favorite animal) and people (point with thumbs at self)
On Day 7
God rested (place hands together by face as sleeping)
• Creation Wheel (Adapted from Big Book of Christian Crafts)
- Print the black and white creation wheel template on cardstock and then cut out the circle. Add a title to the empty segment. Color the pictures.
- Using construction paper, trace and cut out a second circle the same size. Cut out a “pie” segment from the second circle that is slightly smaller than one segment on the first circle. Make sure not to cut all the way into the center. Insert a brad (paper fastener) into the center of both circles with the second circle on top.
- Review the creation story by turning the top wheel to expose the pictures below.
---------------or--------------
- Cut two circles and create your own wheel by drawing or using stickers for the 7 days of creation.
• Creation Song (Thank you, Connie, for this idea.)
Do you Know Who Made the World?
Tune: "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Do You Know the Muffin Man"
Do you know who made the world,
made the world, made the world?
Do you know who made the world?
It was God who made the world.
Replace the word 'world' with other things that God created depending on the day of creation (cows, dogs, trees, etc.) Have the child suggest their own ideas.
• I believe flannelgraph is still one of the best ways to teach Bible stories. Because of this, in each lesson plan, you will see page numbers associated to the Betty Lukens Through the Bible in Felt Teacher's Manual. On the specific page of the Teacher Manual, the Bible story, as well as a list of the needed flannelgraph scenes, characters, and props, are listed to help you tell the story. Read more about "Using Flannelgraph."
• Numbers:
- Create a number book using the Number posters. Each week color and add the appropriate number of stickers to the number poster. At the end of the curriculum, a book will be created for numbers 0-15.
- Create an Apple Tree Number Book throughout the year. Draw or add the correct number of apples to each tree.
- Be sure to say the Number Rhyme as the child traces the sandpaper numbers. This helps the child learn the correct formation.
• Calendar Activity - Here is an activity that would be a great start to each day to reinforce numbers, days of the week, and months of the year.
• Colors:
- Make cookies with black and white chocolate chips or eat Oreos
- While walking around the house, shine a flashlight on things that are “blue”
- Focus on the colors of creation in the Bible story - black (darkness), blue (water), white (clouds in the sky)
-
Use the template to build a color ice cream cone or caterpillar. Each week add the new colors.
- View:Boz Colors and Shapes - Discover God's world through colors and shapes!
• Objective Checklist
Use the checklist to determine what your child knows
• Family Fun - Create a new family tradition of make homemade ice cream. Correlate with the "Building with Colors" activity.
- Ice Cream in a Bag - Video Directions, Directions
- Ice Cream in a Coffee Can - Directions
• Fine Motor Skill:
Write "My Family" on the bottom of a blank piece of paper. Demonstrate how to draw your family. Use simple shapes and explain what you are doing as you draw. Let your child tell you what to draw. Your child will be drawing their family periodically throughout the curriculum. This demonstration helps prepare them for this activity. Later in the week, give your child a chance to draw his/her family.
• Gross Motor Skill:
Play "Put the Fire Out" - an fun outside activity that involves sidewalk chalk, water, and a sponge
Be sure to look over the Development Guide Between Ages 3 & 4 so that you are familiar with developmental milestones for your child's age.
