Book of the Week: Is Your Mama a Llama?
Ideas:
• Book of the Week Ideas:
There are many /a/ sounds in this book. Emphasize them in words like "mama" and "llama".
Talk about why each animal can't be the llama's mama.
Talk about the different sounds the animals make.
• Colors
- Notice the colors of a stop light
- Focus on the colors of creation in the Bible story
• Practice Twos - Count body parts (ears, eyes, feet, legs, hands, etc.) as the child gets dressed or during bath time
- Pair socks, shoes, gloves
• Creation Fingerplay
On Day 1 (On numbers - put corresponding fingers in the air)
God created light (close fists and then quickly open in the air and bring down to side creating arches)
On Day 2
God created the sky (wave arms in the air) and water (make waves with hands)
On Day 3
God created land (with palms facing the floor, run hands flat in front of you) and plants (place one fist inside the other and pop the one fist through the other - sign language for plant)
On Day 4
God created the sun (hold arm up in the air with fingers spread wide), moon (with opposite arm make a "c" formation with your hand in the air), and stars (with index fingers putting up alternate right and left hand moving up in the air - sign language for stars)
On Day 5
God created the fish (swim hands with palms together) and birds (join thumbs and fly hands in the air)
On Day 6
God created animals (choose your favorite animal) and people (point with thumbs at self)
On Day 7
God rested (place hands together by face as sleeping)
• Creation Song (Thank you, Connie, for this idea.)
Do you Know Who Made the World?
Tune: "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Do You Know the Muffin Man"
Do you know who made the world,
made the world, made the world?
Do you know who made the world?
It was God who made the world.
Replace the word 'world' with other things that God created depending on the day of creation (cows, dogs, trees, etc.) Have the child suggest their own.
• Letter of the Week
- This is the first week that letters are introduced. Use the sandpaper letters to teach the child the proper formation of each letter. Use a consistent "saying" each time you trace the letter.
- For learning the alphabet, create lowercase and uppercase cards or use alphabet flash cards to allow the child to match the uppercase and lowercase letters together, say their name, and say the phonic sound.
- Popsicle Stick A’s: get 3 popsicle sticks and show the child how to make a big A. Either glue them together when you are done with the lesson or just attach some velcro so the child can create it over and over. Remind the child that "A" is shaped like a triangle. Show with popsicle sticks that a big A is shaped like a triangle. Create an "A" and say "A" and then move the stick down and say "triangle." Thank you Shannon for this idea!
- Big A, Little a
Write the letters "a, b, c, A, B, C" on 3"x5" cards. Lay out all six cards and have your child point to the uppercase A and lowercase a. Shuffle the cards and play again. This activity can be done with any amount of 3x5 cards labeled with letters or number or using flashcards.

• Fine Motor Skill:
Using the Peg Puzzles, encourage your child to pick up the puzzle pieces using their thumb and index finger.
• Gross Motor Skill:
Play "Red Light, Green Light" - The "it" person stands at one end of the playing field, with the rest of the players at the other end. "It" turns their back to the others and calls out "Green light!" The players then run as fast as they can towards "it". At any time, "it" can face the players, calling out "Red light", and the others must freeze in place. If anyone fails to stop, they are out or must return to the starting line. Other variations include calling out "Yellow light" as a diversion, or where they must walk instead of run to "it". Calling Yellow Light has no consequence. The first player to reach the person who is "it" wins and becomes "it" for the next round. (Source Wikipedia)
