w - little valley, valley

Ideas:
• Letter & Number Ideas:
Weeks 5-9 focus on "angled-line letters."  Start by creating the characters using short and long popsicle sticks and move to writing the characters on 1 1/2" tracing paper with yellow lines and green and red dots as a guide.  Use the Angled Line Characters #1 worksheet to show the progression of the letters and numbers.  Be sure to say the Letter Formation Chant or Number Rhyme as the child creates each character.

v - looks like a valley.  Go online and find pictures of valleys
w - to help remember the letter "W", demonstrate how a "W" will hold water by drawing water lines in the "valleys"

• Name:
Continue to have the child practice writing their name on 1 1/2" tracing paper.  View Learning to Write to decide the appropriate level of difficulty to start for your child.

• Nothing is Impossible with God Science Experiment (Original source unknown)
Materials: Two empty bottles, two balloons, baking soda, water, vinegar and a spoon. Pour approximately 4T of water into one bottle and 4T of vinegar in the other.  Place approximately 2T of baking soda in each balloon.  Place the balloons tightly over the bottle tops without letting any of the baking soda fall in.  Important - Have the child sit back away from the bottles so they won't accidentally get spattered if the balloon comes off the bottle.  Also make sure all pieces of balloon are thrown away so that nothing can be placed in the mouth.

Ask the child:
 - Can you run really, really fast?
 - Can you get dressed all by yourself?
 - Can you jump up high?
"These things are all 'possible' things.  Things you can really do."

Ask the child:
 - Can you walk on the clouds?
 - Can you lift your house off the ground?
 - Can you walk on water?
"These things are all 'impossible' things.  Things you can't really do.  We know that all things are possible for God.  Did you hear part of our memory verse?  Say it with me.  Nothing is impossible for God."

Place the materials on a table.  "When we try to do things on our own that are really hard, this is what happens."  Lift up the balloon to let the baking soda fall into the water bottle.  (Nothing happens.)  "It is impossible to do things without God."

"What did we say could happen when God is helping us?  Nothing is impossible for God."  Repeat this phrase over and over as you lift up the balloon to let the baking soda fall into the vinegar bottle.  (The balloon will inflate.)  "What made the difference?  Nothing is impossible for God.  David's brothers thought he was crazy going against the giant.  David knew that nothing was impossible with God on his side."

• Spatial:
- Make a point to discuss right and left as you drive, put on socks, put on a coat, etc.
- Move toys spatially

• Color By Number Worksheet - color and cut out the ball when finished.  As you read the directions, point to the words.  Allow the child to read the numbers and figure out the color needed by looking at the first letter.  (i.e.,  What is the first letter of this word - y.  "Y" says? - /y/.  What color begins with the /y/ sound?)

• Place magnetic refrigerator numbers (1, 4) and letters (Tt, Ii, E, F, Ll, H, Vv, Ww) into a bag.  Have your child draw out a number or letter.  Have the child tell you:  the color, name, sound, and case (uppercase or lowercase) of the letter and number.

• Pragmatic Activity
Pragmatics is the study of language in a social setting.  Included in the 4 Year Curriculum are suggestions to help a child use language appropriately in social situations.  Select one or more of the example pages to discuss.
