•  The Objective Pre-Checklist is a great place to start.  In education, teachers use pretests to determine what needs to be learned and post test to evaluate whether the concept was learned.  The Pre-checklists can be used to determine what your child knows.  Both are based upon the curriculum's objectives.

• When working on the curriculum, sit at a table (i.e., Creative Projects Table) designed for the child so that their feet can touch the floor. Also, use fat pencils, markers, and crayons to aid in better control when writing.

• Make sure to correctly model the phonetic sounds of the letters as well as the correct way to write letters and numbers.

• I always try to make my children use their adjectives and nouns to describe something other than the using the word “that”, "this", or simply pointing. I feel this is important to increase their vocabularies as well as them learning to explain their desires - especially during frustrating situations.

• What to do with younger siblings? A child is never too young to be read or sung to. Since this is half of the curriculum, do this portion when a younger sibling is around. For the second portion of the curriculum, entertain the younger sibling by having them color or draw at the same table or play close by. Of course nap times are always an excellent time to focus on the more “educational” parts of the curriculum.

• Don't skip important steps.  Learning must occur in a sequence.  For example, recognizing shapes is a prerequisite for learning letters and numbers.  A child must be able to break up compound words before they can separate each sound in a word. Skipping over the "little stuff" doesn't cause your child to read sooner.
