Preschool Assessment

In education, teachers use assessment guides to identify what skills need to be taught and to measure what the child has learned. These tools show what a child already knows, track the child’s progress throughout the year, and can help determine which of the five ABCJesusLovesMe Curricula is the best fit for the child.

Each checklist is aligned with the learning objectives and developmental expectations for its specific Curriculum level.

Tips to Use the Assessments

  • Gather supplies
Gather necessary toys, manipulatives, and assessment form before beginning. It helps to use different colored pens to show what the child knew at various stages—such as pretest, mid-year, and posttest.

  • This is not a test
Avoid calling the assessment a “test.” Instead, view it as a helpful tool to identify areas for growth and to communicate progress with parents.

  • Keep it relaxed
The child will perform best when they feel comfortable. Sit beside them, smile, and keep the tone light and encouraging.

  • Make it feel like play
Present the assessment as a game or activity rather than a test. This helps the child stay engaged and respond naturally.

  • Choose a quiet space
Avoid busy or distracting moments. A calm environment helps the child focus and show what they know.

  • Follow the child’s pace
Move slowly and give the child time to think and respond. There is no need to rush.

  • Watch more than you ask
Observe how the child approaches tasks, not just whether they get the “right” answer. Process matters.

  • Offer neutral encouragement
Use phrases like “You’re working hard” instead of indicating if an answer is right or wrong.

  • Avoid pressure
If the child seems frustrated or tired, take a break and come back later. You will get more accurate results this way.

  • “Not yet” is okay
If the child cannot complete a task, simply note it and move on. Skip sections that are clearly beyond the child’s current ability—for example, if they don’t know any letters, don’t go through each one. This information is valuable for guiding instruction, not a sign of failure.

  • Stay objective
Record what the child does, not what you hope or expect them to do.

  • Look for growth, not perfection
Remember, the goal is to see progress and identify next steps, not require mastery.

  • Stay positive
Share assessment results in a positive, encouraging way. Focus on the child’s growth and strengths and highlight areas for continued support. Offer practical suggestions for how parents can reinforce skills at home and remind them that each child develops at their own pace.
  • Pray and stay encouraged
Ask for wisdom as you guide the child. You are planting seeds that will grow in time.

  • Developmental Guidelines
Refer to the ABCJesusLovesMe Developmental Guides for age-appropriate expectations and guidance.

  • When Between Curricula
If using the assessment to determine which Curriculum to use, choose the lower level to build confidence and ensure mastery if a child falls between Curricula.
