Favorite Books for K-2

Whether you are reading to a child or helping an emerging reader find the next great book, quality literature matters. The books on this page have been enjoyed by generations of children - mine included - and provide opportunities for laughter, imagination, character growth, and a love of reading. Explore these favorite books for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Choosing quality books is one of the best ways to help a child become a strong reader and lifelong learner. Even after a child begins reading independently, continue reading aloud together. Read-alouds expose children to richer vocabulary, stronger sentence structure, and more complex stories than they can often read on their own.

A good rule of thumb is to select read-aloud books that are about two years above a child's independent reading level. For example, a 1st-grade child may enjoy listening to a book written at a 3rd-grade reading level, allowing the child to grow in comprehension while enjoying stories that might otherwise be out of reach.
