Favorite Books for K-2nd Grade

Whether you are reading to a child or helping an emerging reader find the next great book, quality literature matters. The books on this page have been enjoyed by generations of children - mine included - and provide opportunities for laughter, imagination, character growth, and a love of reading. Explore these favorite books for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Even after a child begins reading independently, continue reading aloud together. Read-alouds expose children to richer vocabulary, more complex sentence structures, and engaging stories that are often beyond their independent reading ability.

A helpful guideline is to choose read-aloud books that are about two grade levels above a child's reading level. For example, if a child is reading at a kindergarten level, select books from the 2nd-grade list below. If a child is reading at a 1st-grade level, consider books from the 3rd–5th Grade Book List. Listening to more advanced books helps build comprehension, expand vocabulary, and foster a love of reading.

Each book includes its reading level. For example, a reading level of 2.7 indicates a book appropriate for a child in 2nd grade during the 7th month of the school year.
