We were introduced to the My First Steps to Reading and My First Steps to Math
books by our librarian. The author, Jane Belk Moncure, introduces every letter and number individually in a book. Filled with phonics and fun, my children frequently choose these books first during our free reading time.
These two series by Jane Moncure are the best books which I have found for teaching numbers, letter, and phonetic sounds. I used these books to introduce the letter and number of the week to my children. They are optional suggestions in the 3 and 4 Year Preschool Curricula.
Jane Moncure's My First Steps to Reading is designed to introduce young children to letters and early phonics skills. In each letter book, a character named “Little _” carries a box and collects items that begin with the featured letter sound. Throughout the story, children see and say the letter sound repeatedly. Each book ends with a review of the featured words and pictures to reinforce vocabulary development and phonics understanding.
When reading the letter books, focus on saying the phonetic sound of the letter rather than the letter’s name. For example,"Little /d/ had a box" instead of "Little d had a box." After reading the book several times, encourage the child to say the letter’s sound independently as you come to it on the page.
In the Jane Moncure My First Steps to Math books, children are introduced to “Little _” and learn about his or her home, which has a specific number of rooms that matches the focus number. As Little _ goes on a walk, he or she finds various items along the way. Children are encouraged to count these items as they appear in the story. Each book concludes with Little _ drawing the featured number and writing the number word, helping children connect counting, number recognition, and number writing.

Unfortunately, these books are no longer in print. However, you may still be able to find them at your local library, through online sellers such as Amazon or eBay, or in used bookstores. Many libraries continue to carry copies in their collections.
To avoid confusion, you may notice that some editions are titled My “A” Book while others are called My “A” Sound Box. The “Sound Box” versions are simply library editions and contain the same content as the standard editions.
After graduating from the My First Steps books, you may enjoy the Animal Antics A to Z by Barbara deRubertis.
